FAQs

How can I be considered for organ transplantation?

Your physician can initiate referral or you may wish to contact the transplant office directly at 717-531-6092. An initial transplant evaluation can then be arranged at the transplant clinic. If you are identified as a candidate, you will undergo several required tests and procedures, which will be reviewed by the transplant coordinator to determine if additional testing is needed. Only after testing will you potentially receive approval from a surgeon to be added to the national organ transplant list.

What should I tell a friend or relative who is considering live organ donation?

Potential donors must contact the transplant office at 717-531-6092 to speak to the living donor coordinator. This will imitate the donor evaluation process.

If I receive a transplant, how long will I stay in the hospital?

Hospital visits vary based on individual needs. The average hospital stay at Hershey Medical Center for kidney transplantation is between three and five days. The average hospital stay at Hershey Medical Center for liver transplant is five to eight days. During this time, our team will work with you to ensure that you have all you need to care for yourself and your newly transplanted organ.

What happens after my transplant?

You will have a team of highly trained professionals and coordinators guiding you throughout your transplant journey. Our skilled coordinators will educate you about caring for yourself after transplants. In addition, our transplant pharmacists help you to understand your medications and our transplant nutritionist offers counseling both before and after transplant. Our experienced transplant social workers support you and your family before and after transplantation. We are here to provide you with the highest level of care throughout your transplant journey.
